There is work to be done for a better future.

We can all take a moment to feel relief at the end of the most wretched presidency in modern history. Just a moment, though, since nothing is over and all the work remains to be done. For the left and for everyone who cares about a better future there are still ongoing crises to address. Biden will not do much of anything — he has promised this. The most urgent issues facing us will not be addressed by him. We cannot grow complacent.

The US is still sinking. The pandemic has surged forth with record daily confirmed cases. Militarized police are still murdering Black people and brutalizing peaceful protestors. Poverty and evictions are rising. Fascism and white supremacy and capitalism have not abated one iota and it is unlikely that Biden will do much to help as he has already promised to let Americans rot with austerity measures. It is going to be a long winter.

America needs what all places need: economics built around human welfare and ecological realities. The people of the US need relief from debt, they need universal healthcare, they need housing and safety and support. The Democrats will not deliver this. They haven’t even promised it this time around. There is no pretence of hope or change, only a more genteel system of exploitation and brutality. There will be no rescue from above.
